WHAT SHOULD I KNOW AND UNDERSTAND ON THE SPECIFIED LANGUAGE LEVEL?

There are 6 standard levels of the language knowledge: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.

LEVEL A1

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

recognize the topic and the basic information in the speech statement (messages, notifications);

understand the statements and know the words in the field of topics related to the everyday matters: about myself (interests, hobby, plans, mood), close relatives, basic shopping, job, place of residence;

understand numbers, prices, time definitions

understand easy questions, statements, instructions

recognize by the intonation of the speaker what he intends to say (question, order, announcement).

READING:

define the basic topic of the text;

recognize the content of the short statements (invitation, notification etc.);

understand the words related to the everyday matters, including international (topics: human, family, everyday life, free time, transport, directions, work(job), school, eating, shopping, money, health, seasons, weather, plants and animals – basic titles);

understand the content of the easy texts with pictures and photos;

can present some basic information based on adverts, ads, menu cards, timetables etc.;

know about Poland: geographical position, countries neighbors, biggest cities and attractions, state symbols, Polish customs and holidays, popular songs, basic historical facts.

SPEAKING:

ask the questions and give the answers;

talk and exchange with the information, speak freely

talk about myself and environment, about known places and people;

know Polish alphabet, can spell easy words.

WRITING:

write the separate sentences, easy texts (private letters, notes, messages, greetings, congratulations, a description of a person and places, a report, a story, a review, a school essay on a simple topic, for example, on the topic "my day");

differ the official and non-official style of writing;

fill up the form with personal data;

use the Polish version of handwriting, spelling rules (in the range: large and small letters, diacritical signs, punctuation - comma, exclamation point, question mark)..

GRAMMER:

decline the basic nouns, pronouns, adjectives in singular and plural, recognize a gender and a declination of such parts of the speech, learn the new words and expressions, develop my vocabulary;

know the Polish numerals and their declination;

conjugate verbs with personal pronouns: -ę, -esz; -ę, -isz/-ysz; -am/-em, -asz, -esz, learn verbs’ conjugations, learn the new words and expressions, develop my vocabulary also with the verbs in different conjugations;

conjugate the verbs in present, past and future tenses;

recognize the active and reflexive aspect of the verb:

LEVEL A2

Already have the knowledge required at the level A1.

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

expand the amount of the understood information (in messages, notifications), expand my vocabulary;

recognize the speaker's intentions through the constructions (thanking, apologizing, inviting, making wishes, congratulations, expressing feelings and opinions) and the information about features, spatial and temporal relations (place, direction, succession in time), quantitative and qualitative as well as possession and affiliation;

know the basic rules of the politeness (greetings, farewells), social rules (behavior at the table, Polish dishes, meal time, invitation to dance, etc.);

understand non-verbal contact (distance, kissing in hand).

READING:

increase my autonomy in the choice of the reading and read more;

know better about Polish reality: Poland in the European Union, the biggest regions, Polish birthday’s and name-day’s parties, making visits as a guest, behavior and dress in the official situations (on the examine), cultural and artistic life, travels around Poland and Europe, works of the selected famous Poles.

SPEAKING:

take part in easy conversation, react to the interlocutor's statement;

know how to establish contact, start a conversation, support it, interrupt and finish it;

talk about myself, my topic and my environment, describe a person, events, actions, situations;

enter the role of communication (tourist, known-unknown, colleague, friend, family member;

compare known things and situations, known people;

plan the utterance (starting, ending), express myself clearly;

spell Polish words and expressions.

WRITING:

care for the consistency of the text, use conjunctions;

use the formal and informal styles;

understand and use grammar gaps (omission of the word, for example: Jan to student. – Jan is a student), antonyms (opposing words: zdrowy – chory – healthy - weak) and synonyms or synonymous expressions (words with the same or similar meaning: prosty – nietrudny easy – not difficult), epithets (determinations of a nouns: ładna dziewczyna – beautiful girl).

GRAMMER:

decline more complex nouns, pronouns, adjectives in singular and plural, especially irregular nouns (dzień, tydzień, człowiek, przyjaciel - day, week, man, friend) and nouns in neuter gender ending on –um (museum, lyceum), conjugate the verbs, give the verbs in Present, Past and Future tenses, recognize active and reflexive forms and aspects of the verb, recognize types of the verbs and the verbs of motion (jechać, jeździć);

recognize the literal changes (alternations) in the words (pies - psa, miasto - w mieście) and create right form expressions;

know Polish numerals and decline them, especially generals and ordinals (jeden, - one pierwszy - first);

know the modal verbs (trzeba – must, warto - would, należy – should, can)

create the degree of comparison of the adverbs and adjectives (dobrze, lepiej, najlepiej) – (good – better – the best)

create feminine and male gender of the nouns (student – studentka);

make the questions with or without the word Czy (Czy idziesz do kina?, Idziesz do kina?) – (Do you go to the cinema?)

create the sentences, using numeral + noun (Trzy panie idą ulicą.) – (Three girls are going along the street)

create complex subordinate sentences, using conjunction więc

create complex subordinate sentences with conjunctions: dlatego że, kiedy, gdy – because of, when, where and conditionals (jeśli, gdyby – if –then, if- would).

LEVEL B1

Already have the knowledge required at the levels A1 and A2.

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

understand the topic of the speech and recognize intonation, also understand the information of the slowly talking on the radio or TV;

understand the specific information about person (preferences), family (history of the family, quantity, family holydays), everyday life, sport (sports disciplines, equipment, sports holidays), places (city vs village, city buildings and public institutions: train station, bank, library, post office ), travels (travel agency, documents, excursions, type of the baggage), education (education system, lessons at school and the university and out of the lectures), work, job (labor market, labor law), meals, eating (culinary recipes, dishes, their constituents, cooking), shopping (shops, products, information and promotions, ways of payment), health (diets, lifestyle, accident), environment (nature protection), government and society (state organization, state holidays, political and economic situation, political parties, living conditions, crime), science and technics (researchers and founds), media (press, radio, TV, internet), culture (cultural area, cultural events), stereotypes;

play the social roles (employer, worker, official, citizen, waiter, consumer, traveler, passenger);

understand the gestures and the facial expressions.

READING:

increase the diversity of the literature and read more;

know better about Polish reality: sea, rivers, lakes, norms of the behavior during religious celebrations, state and family holidays, such as on the city’s, school’s and university’s celebrations.

SPEAKING:

speak correctly phonetically, highlight the necessary information;

ask for the advice and put it into practice;

express my feelings (surprise, sadness, interest);

answer the questions;

take part in the discussion and put in my opinion;

give the prepared speech;

toast.

WRITING:

make wishes, express a request, refuse, express my confidence and uncertainty, possibility, necessity, need, surprise, pain, nervousness, compassion, indifference, disappointment;

express critics, opinion, arguments, give examples, make advices or not;

understand the compresences and use them (for example metaphors such as: zdrowy jak ryba - as healthy as a bull);

use the required style of writing to the addressee (formal, informal, spoken);

use Polish mail norms;

write names, abstracts, articles, stories, make presentations, write s diary, CV, collaborate plans, make notes;

write short dictations;

GRAMMER:

make sentences in the Present Perfect, Past Perfect and the Future Perfect tenses

use conditionals with the aim of story’s expression, make wishes, requests using them (Czy mogłabyś mi to przeczytać?) – (Could/Would you read it for me?)

create nouns from the verbs (read – reading);

create complex dependent sentences: Basia zapytała, czy pożyczę jej słownik/ Basia asks me, could I give her the vocabulary, and independent sentences: Basia zapytała: "Pożyczysz mi słownik?"/ Basia asks: „Could you give me the vocabulary?”;

make logical statement (narrative sentences) - (Ale zimno! – It’s cold today!)

create complex sentences with a conjunction jednak - however;

make narrative sentences, exclamations, supplementary, attributive, neighboring questions, questions with subjects.

LEVEL B2

Already have the knowledge required at the levels A1, A2 and B1.

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

understand the content of the more complex statements by meaning, sentences in a literal and figurative sense, which expressed in the normal temp and in good acoustical conditions, more complex by the intonation (also compliments);

play the social roles (sportsmen, sports fan, watcher, reader, listener, driver, owner of the auto, witness, injured in accident, accident or collision participant)

understand the phrases, words and idioms, omniums. homonyms, onomatopoeias and diminutives

READING:

increase the variety in the literature and read more, also fragments of the Polish prose;

quickly view through the texts find some information;

understand texts written in different styles and in different intentions (warning, protest, complaint, claim, order, recommendation, advertisement);

deepen knowledge about Polish reality.

SPEAKING:

speak fluently on different topics, take part in the discussions, can ask someone to tell something or ask someone to call somebody in a telephone conversation;

know the rules of the official and non-official conversation;

give the full information on the exact topic and explain my own opinion;

give the arguments;

compare people and situations, can define causes and consequences;

can give someone’s expression and my attitude towards it;

take part in discussions;

include citations;

can interview someone.

WRITING:

understand the compresences and use them (for example metaphors such as: zdrowy jak ryba - as healthy as a bull);

use the required style of writing to the addressee (formal, informal, spoken);

write a characteristic or a description, a report on a book, a report, an official letter, a journal, a resume, a review according to the instruction (genre, length of the text, social roles, time for the task);

can correct my own mistakes;

create different types of the sentences, also the complex ones;

use phraseological expressions.

GRAMMER:

decline Polish proper names (Białystok, Zakopane);

use pronouns: żaden, każdy, wszyscy – none, everyone, everybody;

create the infinitives for the verbs;

use adjectives and adverbs;

create the verbs in active and passive voice, such as reflexive aspect of the verb;

know the names of the continents, countries, cities, create nationalities from them;

create pronouns from the nouns (lekarz – lekarski, doctor – doctor’s) and conversely (names of abstract features: dojrzały – dojrzałość – mature - maturity);

create diminutive form of the words (Piotruś - Petter, dziewczątko - girlie);

create questions in dependent and independent forms;

use double negation, know what does it mean;

create complex sentences, transform them.

LEVEL C1

Already have the knowledge required at the levels A1 and A2, B1 and B2.

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

understand the content and intentions in the authentic messages, which include direct and indirect intentions, also messages on the new abstract topics, which are built from the complex, opaque sentences in the standard and non-standard forms of the language;

use various strategies to understand the text;

understand the detailed information, especially about the person, family, friendly everyday life, rest, sport (extreme types of sport), housing (housing market, expenses for the maintenance of a house / apartment, breakdowns and minor repairs), places, travels, work (job) (up-to-date organization of the job places), education (historical aspects of the education), eating (genetically modified products), shopping (auction), health (health care system, health insurance), nature environment (natural disasters), government and society (corruption, money laundering, the army, international organizations, international relations and politics), science and technics (science vs ethics), media, culture;

know that there is a national Polish taboo – something, about what should not be said;

understand spoken expressions and idioms, omniums. homonyms, onomatopoeias and diminutives.

READING:

understand and can formulate position of the text’s author, understand the texts of ironic and humorous, spoken and texts with idioms;

can separate facts from the opinion of the author of the text;

can quickly look through the text in order to find the necessary information, can process that information;

deepen the knowledge about Polish reality: the role of the Catholic Church in Poland, regional differences (mental, cultural, linguistic), elements of Polish history.

SPEAKING:

speak fluently, spontaneously in all situations, on all topics, conduct discussions, react to meddling, precisely formulate my views, justify, argue, show pros and cons of the solutions, cite someone else's statement and comment on it;

give the previously prepared report fluently and effortlessly, give a speech;

WRITING:

write a review with a justification, make a presentation, can write and make a speech, write a motivational letter, CV;

know the styles of writing: official, scientific, artistic and journalistic;

recognize dialethisms (baca, pyry), archaisms (gród, niewiasta), know abbreviations (UZ, PAN) and word’s modifications (chłopisko), figurative (using metaphors: wycie wiatru) and omanotopic words (szeleści), rhetorical questions (without answer), know a lot of phrases on such topics as: the natural phenomenons, the world of plants, people (behavior, parts of the body), colors, recognize the words that came from the mythology, the Bible, the literature related to the history.

GRAMMER:

decline the complex nouns (szczenię - szczenięta), as well as nouns that are used only in plural (spodnie, skrzypce, drzwi, nożyce); irregular nouns (ksiądz, książę, chrzest), two-gene nouns (sierota, niemowa, gaduła);

know the outdated forms of adjectives (pełen, gotów, zdrów - full, ready, healthy);

decline the collective numerals and also numerals with the word half - (pół litra, półtora roku – half a liter, one and half a year); correctly combine non-specified numerals with other expressions in the text (wielu zatrudnionych, mnóstwo rzeczy);

create forms of the verbs: drzeć, kląć, wieźć, wieść, zamknąć and so on, know the habitual verbs such as miewać, bywać, czytywać, pisywać;

create and use the analytical forms of the Past Tense (Coś ty przyniósł? – Did you bring something?);

create the form of the verb with the part niech (let’s) : niech pomyślę! – let’s think!;

create the impersonal forms of the past tense: napisano, czytano, mówiło się – it was written, was read, was spoken;

use the adverbs created from the adjectives: po królewsku, na miękko

use the names of abstract qualities (miłość, pycha - love, pride);

create an augmentation (magnifying and amplifying form of words) (staruch, babsko), using expressive forms of words (straszydło);

know complex adjectives and nouns (korkociąg, biało-czerwony, jasnoniebieski);

know the verbs with prefixes: (brać: ubrać, wybrać), (popodpisywać, napracować się, dopchać się);

create the verbs from the nouns: (śnieg – zaśnieżyć – the snow – to snow);

create the sentence without perimeter (Widać już koniec naszych kłopotów - It is seen that …), and also can change the simple sentence on the complex.

LEVEL C2

Already have the knowledge required at the levels A1 and A2, B1 and B2, C1.

COMPREHANDING (LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND):

understand the content of the rapid conversation with the complex, opaque built sentences and elements of slang, everyday talking, regional features and archaisms;

understand the detailed information, especially as for the human (challenge, NIP, ID number) and so on;

understand the dialethisms and the archaisms.

READING:

quickly preview texts with the aim of finding the necessary information, select the necessary things;

deepen the knowledge about Polish reality: the role of the Catholic Church in Poland, regional differences (mental, cultural, linguistic), elements of Polish history.

SPEAKING:

speak fluently, spontaneously in all situations, on all topics, conduct the discussions;

give the previously prepared report fluently and effortlessly, give a speech, use apostrophes.

WRITING:

write down the detailed stories and comparisons;

know styles: official, scientific, artistic and journalistic;

recognize dialethisms (baca, pyry) and archaisms (gród, niewiasta), know abbreviations (UZ, PAN) and word’s modifications (chłopisko), figurative (using metaphors: wycie wiatru) and omanotopic words (szeleści), rhetorical questions (without answer) and apostrophes;

write almost without mistakes.

GRAMMER:

decline irregular nouns (such as: sędzia, hrabia), nouns with lettering (gołąb - gołębia), nouns denoting colors (biel, żółć, czerwień), nouns that are used only in plural / singular (oboje państwo, doktorostwo), collective nouns (ptactwo, listowie, chuliganeria), only singular nouns (dobro, wiedza, życie);

know ancient forms of the adjectives: ciekaw, wart, rad, świadom, wesół;

decline the collective numerals, so that with the word half - (pół litra, półtora roku – half a liter, one and half a year); correctly combine non-specified numerals with other expressions in the text (wielu zatrudnionych, mnóstwo rzeczy);

create the verbs: wlec, mleć (mielić), zgasnąć and so on.

Everyone learns differently, so you need to find the best way to try different methods. The selection of the method depends on the level of language proficiency, as well as on the learning system: individually, under the guidance of the teacher, in the group.

LEVEL A1

In order to understand the message content well, you must first listen to what people are saying around, ask them to repeat, repeat words within yourself and speak aloud, do not be afraid of mistakes, just talk. Listen to your language. The teacher can suggest listening and playing simple dialogs that can be played several times. With this you can learn to distinguish between words, sayings, sounds.

To understand the written text well, you need to learn the Polish letters and their pronunciation, read first simple texts, and then more complex, on the everyday topics, read dialogues and monologues. You can also use texts from the Internet.

You need to write polish letters, especially to work on these: r, l ,ł, t, ą, ę, ó, ź, ś, ć, rz, cz, sz, dz and capital letters: L and Ł. Habits made at this stage will be useful later.

Don’t be afraid of the Polish grammar, you need to be patient. It is best to teach it a bit, but often.

What can I do?

-        individually: to repeat aloud the known words phrases, create phrases, dialogs, write simple sentences yourself, read simple articles in newspapers and the internet, listen to songs;

-        with the teacher: to perform tasks such as "right / wrong", answer the questions with several answers, lay out the pictures in the correct order and place them in accordance to the text, write in the notebook and on the board new words, organize the fragments of the text, answer the open question (when, where, why?), learn the new grammar rules, practice filling in the gaps in the text, use the learned expressions and phrases;

-        with group and in pairs: create dialogues, ask questions and give answers, play various roles in dialogs, simulate different situations, talk on a given topic, create short stories, describe images, explain words (synonyms and antonyms), group words that are learned, create a list of words and phrases that are used in everyday situations.

Is better to learn grammar with a teacher, who first shows an example, the principle, then teaches to apply and to create their own right forms. Using grammatical rules arranges knowledge, but this is not enough to be able to speak. You need to have the courage to speak with errors, you need to have the desire to hear these mistakes and constantly correct them. If you know the grammar of a certain European language, and especially Slavic, you can discover a lot of things in common.

LEVEL A2

If you want to deepen your skills, you need to: watch Polish TV, listen to Polish radio, watch videos in Polish on the Internet. Feel free to ask and listen to the answers. You need to listen to songs, news, search for basic information and not be afraid if you do not understand everything. Over time, you will understand more. The same thing about reading: also you need to read loudly and ask about the correct pronunciation of complex words. Write carefully, pay attention to the character signs for the Polish language. Arrange the grammar rules written on cards, boards, to keep always at hand.

What can I do?

-        Individually: repeat loudly known words, grammar rules, make sentences, sketches, play different roles in dialogs, write independently, repeat by pattern, listen to messages (taking into account the level of knowledge of the listener's language), read texts in the press, on the Internet, listen to the songs;

-        With the teacher:  to perform tasks such as "right / wrong", answer the questions with several answers, lay out the pictures in the correct order and place them in accordance to the text, write in the notebook and on the board new words, organize the fragments of the text, answer the open question (more difficult to learn), learn new grammatical rules and repeat already learned, practice to fill in the gaps in the text, select the desired form, fill in the tables and add the text with the necessary words (from the table), using the grammatical rules learned previously, to recognize intonations, to express your opinions;

-        with group and in pairs: create dialogues, ask questions and give answers, play various roles in dialogs, simulate different situations, talk on a given topic, create short stories, describe images, explain words (synonyms and antonyms), group learned words, create a list of words and phrases that used in everyday situations, collectively determine the topic of speech, determine the definite words and discuss the content.

Grammar at this level is not only knowledge of certain rules, but also their awareness and use. You start to create your own texts, express your thoughts, emotions. Work at this stage requires the permanent fixing of grammatical rules and the expansion of vocabulary. It is also important to write regularly - better blog or diary, letters, messages on the internet forums.

LEVEL B1

At this stage, you are listening to the long speeches that talk slowly and clearly, understand the intentions of the speaker, and information provided in authentic texts (radio and television). The teacher acts as a leader, setting higher goals and motivating to the deepen knowledge and skills. Choose the texts that are suitable for your level – the lightweight or complex ones. No need to be afraid to experiment, search for interesting articles and discuss them, share them with friends. Must read a lot. Ask about the meaning of the words. Repeat the grammar rules systematically. Remember what you will meet / see. Sing in Polish, learn by heart rhymed texts, write your blog every day. Don’t be afraid of mistakes, the main thing is to understand.

What can I do?

-        Individually: listen and repeat prepared statements, dialogues and monologues, parts of video, read articles in the press, on Internet, listen to the songs, analyze the texts and sayings, describe phenomena, write stories, fill in missing words in the text, use bilingual dictionaries,

-        With the teacher: to perform tasks such as "right / wrong", answer the questions with several answers, lay out the pictures in the correct order and place them in accordance to the text, write in the notebook and on the board new words, organize the fragments of the text, answer the open question (more difficult to learn), learn the new grammatical rules and repeat already learned, practice fill in the gaps in the text, select the desired form, fill in the tables and add the text with the necessary words (from the table), use the previously learned grammar rules, recognize the tone and intentions of the speaker, express your opinion, add missing parts text and give them headlines;

-        with group and in pairs: make a "brainstorming", express association with the given situation, topic, event, translate text, partially and completely change the style from formal to informal, and vice versa, explain new words, discuss them, using words like or opposite in meaning, determine which words are needed only to understand the message, and which we will use frequently, create a mental map, group words and associations, define the meaning of words and expressions, write and replenish vocabulary, reproduce dialogues and monologues, practice writing on a board, in a notebook.

Communication helps to develop a linguistic resource, to see and understand various social situations (roles), to pay attention to the context of the statement, taking into account the gestures and facial expressions. Definitely you are still talking with mistakes, you do not yet know many words and their correct form, but everything will come over time. You can even pronounce a toast and a prepared speech! In a long speech, you express arguments, thoughts, feelings. You read more and more, including fragments of Polish prose, leaflets, guides, lists, textbooks, popular science texts. You understand simple metaphors. You take an active part in the life of society (cultural, sports, professional).

LEVEL B2

At this stage, you have to think about how to learn well. You are much more independent, so the teacher should help you in this, especially to identify difficulties and problems and help to overcome them. You should write letters at this stage, implement projects, participate in creating lessons by making presentations, descriptions, take part in the discussion.

What can you do except prior learning methods:

·       Individually: I listen myself to authentic statements, dialogues and monologues, read texts in the press, on the internet, discuss with friends, make contact with Poles to learn in tandem;

·       under the guidance of a teacher: I solve tasks to the text, answer more and more complex open questions, learn new grammar, practice, organize texts, supplement them and give them titles and subtitles, read texts showing the diversity of style and social language, write texts using the given vocabulary, get to know various text forms (genres) and I learn their standard version, write dictations, repeat language breaks, learn about Polish literature and history;

·       with the group and in pairs: we transform sentences and texts, discuss and talk on the topic, discuss issues, create glossaries and maps of thoughts and words, organize the lexicon, create definitions of words, write texts and improve them together, present papers on given topics, get to know stereotypes - not only Polish .

You play different social roles, you learn vocabulary and express emotions, judgments and arguments. You gradually introduce into your language resource common expressions and idioms, homonyms, onomatopoeias and spitting. You should already be able to speak freely on various topics, including by phone. Use a varied vocabulary. Try to practice quoting someone else's statements and expressing your opinion, use discussions, simple comparisons. You already know the spelling rules - try to apply them consistently.

LEVEL C1

You're already good at communicating, writing and Polish grammar. You feel the need to speak and write like a native Pole - intuitive, spontaneous, free.

What can you do except prior learning methods:

·       Individually: I’m looking for a new study methods yourself, reach for new sources - texts, textbooks, dictionaries (one and bilingual), meet people who, like me, learn to speak and write in Polish, exchange experiences, check what I don’t know.

·       under the guidance of a teacher: I read and interpret texts in different styles and topics, write dictations, I learn new grammatical issues, perpetuate the old, get to know Polish realities, literature, elements of history

·       with the group and in pairs: we paraphrase sentences or fragments of the text, build lexical and conceptual networks learn lexis based on associations, we consolidate the meaning of homonymous forms, organize vocabulary and categorize them, talk about Polish taboos and topics.

You practice different listening strategies, you use different techniques to hear the desired information you need in the message. You understand and create messages not only of direct, clearly expressed meaning, but also of indirect meaning, whose meaning depends on the context of the statement. You are constantly expanding your vocabulary, learning new grammar rules, writing more complicated texts. You are consistent in a texts writing, they have a clear goal. You get to know different styles of Polish. You can match the official and non-official form to the situation in which you are.

LEVEL C2

To speak as a native You get to know Polish regional varieties. Read functionally diverse texts, various genres, including Polish beautiful literature. Take part in various cultural events, create them. Comment political and social events not only about Poland, but the international world’s problems. You write often fluently, formulate your thoughts freely, improve writing complex specialized texts (official, scientific, journalistic). You study generally individually, but if you want to continue working in group, you become a full-fledged co-founder, an active co-participant of lessons and projects, meetings not only on linguistic but also cultural matters.
